How do plantar warts spread?
Plantar warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus can be picked up from warm, moist shared environments such as pools, showers and change rooms, particularly through small breaks in the skin.
Common symptoms
They may appear as rough, grainy areas of skin with tiny black dots and can become painful when standing or walking.
Diagnosis and treatment
A healthcare professional can examine the lesion and distinguish it from corns and other skin problems. Some warts resolve naturally, but painful, spreading or persistent lesions may be treated with salicylic acid, cryotherapy or other clinic-based options. Treatment should be selected according to lesion size, location, duration and overall health.
Preventing spread
- Keep feet clean and dry.
- Wear thongs or sandals in public showers.
- Avoid picking at lesions.
- Do not share towels, socks or footwear.
Arrange assessment if a lesion is painful, rapidly increasing in size or number, bleeds easily, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation.
