This page provides general health information and does not diagnose an individual condition. Persistent, worsening or concerning symptoms should be assessed by an appropriately qualified health professional.
Understanding metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia literally means pain in the metatarsal region. Several different conditions can cause pain in the same area, so diagnosis should go beyond the label.
Contributing factors
- Increased walking, running or standing load
- Foot shape that concentrates pressure
- Thin or poorly cushioned footwear
- High heels
- Reduced big-toe joint function
- Callus over a high-pressure area
- Plantar plate, neuroma, stress injury or joint disease
What can you do?
- Use wider, cushioned footwear.
- Modify high-impact activity temporarily.
- Metatarsal pads or orthoses may redistribute pressure when correctly selected and positioned.
- Seek assessment for focal, persistent pain, numbness, swelling or toe deformity.
Severe focal bone pain, swelling, inability to bear weight or symptoms that worsen despite load reduction require assessment.
The Footpath Health approach
Footpath Health is designed to help you move from a symptom or question toward an appropriate next step without pretending that an online article can make an individual diagnosis. Sometimes that next step is self-management; sometimes it is podiatry, physiotherapy or GP assessment; and sometimes imaging or specialist care is appropriate.
Still not sure what the right next step is?
Tell Footpath Health what is bothering you and we can help guide you towards the most appropriate type of healthcare professional.
