This page provides general health information and does not diagnose an individual condition. Persistent, worsening or concerning symptoms should be assessed by an appropriately qualified health professional.
Why are nerve assessments important?
Healthy nerves allow you to feel pain, temperature and injury, control muscles and maintain balance. Diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy can reduce these protective signals, allowing small injuries to go unnoticed.
Who should be assessed?
People living with diabetes should have regular foot assessments. More frequent review may be recommended for reduced sensation, previous ulcers, poor circulation or other risk factors.
What happens during the assessment?
Your clinician will review your medical history, diabetes management and symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, weakness or balance changes, then examine the feet and lower legs.
Checking sensation
Tests may include light touch, vibration and protective sensation. These are simple and generally painless.
Strength, movement and circulation
Muscle strength, coordination, walking pattern and balance may be assessed. Foot pulses, temperature and other circulation checks are often performed at the same visit.
What happens afterwards?
If reduced sensation or other concerns are found, the clinician can explain your risk level and recommend a plan that may include regular podiatry, footwear advice, daily self-checks, diabetes management support or referral for further investigation.
If you have diabetes and develop a new foot wound, spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever or a sudden circulation change, seek prompt clinical assessment.
