This page provides general health information and does not diagnose an individual condition. Persistent, worsening or concerning symptoms should be assessed by an appropriately qualified health professional.
Understanding the difference
A prefabricated insole is manufactured in standard shapes and sizes. A custom orthotic is prescribed for an individual using measurements, scans or impressions with design features chosen for a specific clinical goal.
What matters most
- Simple cushioning or mild support may be met by a good prefabricated device.
- Custom devices allow more individual control over shape, materials and pressure relief.
- Complex foot shape or highly specific offloading may require individual fabrication.
- Footwear compatibility determines whether either option works in practice.
- Clinical diagnosis and prescription quality matter more than marketing claims.
Before you buy
- Start with the problem you are trying to solve, not the price or technology.
- Ask what the orthotic is intended to change and how success will be measured.
- Consider the shoes in which the device must fit.
Persistent pain should not be managed indefinitely by trying different insoles without determining the underlying cause.
The Footpath Health approach
Footpath Health is designed to help you move from a symptom or question toward an appropriate next step without pretending that an online article can make an individual diagnosis. Sometimes that next step is self-management; sometimes it is podiatry, physiotherapy or GP assessment; and sometimes imaging or specialist care is appropriate.
Still not sure what the right next step is?
Tell Footpath Health what is bothering you and we can help guide you towards the most appropriate type of healthcare professional.
